History

The City of Houston was founded on August 30, 1836 shortly after the Texas War for Independence. The name "Houston" came about from the hero of that war, General Sam Houston and was named that by two brothers (The Allen Brothers) who bought land near the Buffalo Bayou and wanted to start a new town.  After their land purchase, Houston was officially founded and has been monumental to Texas ever since.

During the history of Houston's development many major industries played a part in the expansion and growth of the city.  From early years of railroad, cotton and the discovery of oil, to current day big players such as Information Technology and Health Care - the city of Houston has strong roots in many predominant fields that make Houston successful and robust.

Over the years Houston as expanded to the 4th largest city in the United States.  With a population exceeding 2.4 million in just the Houston city limits, over 145 languages spoken, 90 nations with consular  representation in the city, Houston has by far become of one of the most colorful and diverse cities in the United States.
